How did you start racing BMX?
Gaige: I started racing Bmx because I was playing Tball across the street and could see the track as i played so I went over to it to check it out and liked the way it looked so my mom looked up the name and found out when the next practice was and I took my bike and fell in love with it.
Sequoia: I started racing at Rusty Bowl BMX because my brothers Logan and Gaige both raced. I was always at the track and got tired of just singing the national anthem. When I first started, I was on a strider for the first couple weeks and my mom and dad would run after me . I hated strider because everyone would be clapping and cheering and it made me nervous. So by two and a half I was off on my peddles.
Who helped you at the track when you first started?
Gaige: I didn’t really have anyone specific but there was a group of older guys who were good so I would watch them and want to try doing the things they did because I thought it was really cool looking.
Sequoia: My family has been on the board at the Track, so it made it easy to go and get lots of practice on the track without anybody there until I got comfortable. If it was a track night, my brothers would ride next to me just to keep other kids from running into me.
When was your first National race?
Gaige: My first national was the Chico Golden State Nationals.
Sequoia: I think my first national race was Black Jack Nationals in Reno.
Who do you look up to and why?
Gaige: I look up to Bubba Harris because I loved his riding style and how he wasn’t scared to make moves on people like most pros now and it made it fun to watch videos of him riding.
Sequoia: I look up to Bethany Shriever because she’s a really hard worker. She takes the time to take pictures and talk with us younger kids and she didn’t look like she was annoyed with it. Plus I like her YouTube videos.
What has become your favorite part of BMX racing?
Gaige: I look up to Bubba Harris because I loved his riding style and how he wasn’t scared to make moves on people like most pros now and it made it fun to watch videos of him riding. Sequoia: My favorite part of BMX racing is hanging out with my friends and Supercross teammates. I used to like to travel but now it’s just the normal. Oh, and winning, I like to get my triple Scoops. (Thanks, Grindle, for my nickname.)
What is your biggest BMX goal?
Gaige: My biggest BMX goal is to make it to the Olympics and get World 1.
Sequoia: My goal for BMX is to make the Olympic team and win Gold for USA that would be sick.
As a member of the Factory Supercross BMX squad, how has Supercross helped you grow as BMX racers?
Gaige: It has helped me enjoy the races more and not be so hard on myself if something doesn’t go right and as long as I try my hardest bill doesn’t care how I do all he wants is me to be having fun witch is awesome because most teams put a lot of pressure on the riders by having team sheets so it’s nice to not have that pressure.
Sequoia: I am very grateful for Bill and my other sponsors and teammates. They have really put the fun back into racing for me. I am trying to learn that it’s OK not to always win. Bill always texts me in the morning before racing to remind me to just have fun. It takes a lot of extra pressure off of me so I can just go out and enjoy my ride.
What are your goals for the end of 2024?
Gaige: My goal for the end of this year is to win Grands and get NAG one and top 3 in National and improve on Big Hill.
Sequoia: My goals for the end of 2024 is to do my best while having fun on my bike.
